Oh no — you’ve locked yourself out of your apartment! It happens more often than you’d think. We totally get how frustrating it is — especially when you’re standing there with no keys, no phone, and possibly no shoes.
While we’d love to help directly, we don’t hold a master key, so unfortunately we can’t unlock your door for you. But depending on your type of door lock and the time of day, there are a couple of ways to get back in.
If your front door still has the original SPL-authorised key lock, we can help by providing you with an authorisation letter. You’ll need to take this letter to SPL on Ashmore Road, where they can cut you a new key. The replacement usually costs around $30.
We’re happy to help with the letter if we’re around at the time. Just keep in mind we don’t have set office hours, so we might not always be onsite when the lockout happens (and yes, they always seem to happen at the worst time!).
If you can get to SPL (which, we know, can be tricky if your car keys are also locked inside), they’ll get you sorted fairly quickly.
If you’ve locked yourself out after hours, or it’s a weekend or public holiday when SPL is shut, then your best bet is to call a locksmith.
Just make sure you tell them it’s an SPL-authorised key so they know what kind of tools to bring. Not all locksmiths carry the right gear unless they know what they’re dealing with.
Here’s a handy step-by-step rundown to help you figure out your next move:
Check if a roommate, partner or neighbour has a spare key.
If you have an SPL lock:
– Try to contact us to see if we’re onsite and can give you an authorisation letter.
– Take that letter to SPL on Ashmore Road to get a new key cut (around $30).
If SPL is closed or we’re unavailable:
– Call a locksmith.
– Let them know it’s an SPL-authorised key so they’re prepared.
