Rubbish and Waste Management

Rubbish Chutes

Rubbish chutes play a vital role in maintaining cleanliness, convenience, and hygiene in our buildings. To ensure the system works efficiently for everyone, it’s important that all residents follow best practices when using the chutes.

Proper Use of Rubbish Chutes

Rubbish chutes are designed for everyday household waste only. Misuse can lead to blockages, unpleasant odours, vermin, and increased maintenance costs. Please take a moment to review the following guidelines:

Dos:

  • Bag all rubbish securely before disposal to prevent spills and odours.
  • Place rubbish in the chute before 7am on Monday and Friday, or the night before, to align with scheduled bin collection. Dawn and View also have an additional general waste collection on Wednesdays.
  • Use strong, tied garbage bags to avoid breakage during drop.
  • Double-bag meat and seafood scraps, freeze them, and dispose of them on bin day to reduce odours and pests.
  • If it’s too big to comfortably fit in the chute take to the basement bin room

Don'ts:

  • Do not overfill garbage bags – they may burst on impact.
  • Avoid disposing of heavy or bulky items down the chute including cardboard boxes – this can damage the chute and cause blockages.
  • Never pour liquids into the chute – liquid waste should be poured down the sink to prevent leaks and smells.
  • Do not place hazardous waste in the chute. Use designated disposal facilities.
  • Kitty Litter and other loose items should not be placed down the chute without bagging

Keeping the Chute Area Clean

Please be considerate of your neighbours by wiping down any spills and reporting any issues with the chute system to building management. Regular cleaning is scheduled, but community cooperation is essential for maintaining a pleasant and safe environment.

Recycling

Recycling correctly helps reduce landfill waste and contributes to a more sustainable community. Please use the recycling chute and designated recycling bins located in your basement bin room and follow these simple rules:

What You Can Recycle:

  • Paper and cardboard (flatten boxes before placing in bin or leaving in bin area)
  • Plastic containers and bottles (rinsed, with lids removed)
  • Glass bottles and jars (rinsed)
  • Aluminium and steel cans

What Not to Recycle:

  • Plastic bags or soft plastics (use supermarket collection points)
  • Food scraps or liquids
  • Polystyrene
  • Clothing, electronics or batteries

Tip: If in doubt, leave it out — incorrect recycling can contaminate the entire bin.

Containers for Change Recycling

The Vantage Social Club Committee has installed Containers for Change recycling bins in all basement bin areas. Please refer to the signs on the bins to check whether your bottles or containers are eligible for a refund.

These bins are collected weekly with proceeds used to support Social Club activities that benefit all residents and a generous portion donated to charity.

How to Dispose of Bulky Waste

Bulky items such as furniture, whitegoods, mattresses, or electronics must not be left in common areas, bin rooms or near the rubbish chute.

To dispose of these items responsibly, residents must:

  • Arrange private collection through a waste removal service
  • Arrange donation to Vinnies or another charity organisation who collect furniture items
  • Take items to the nearest Council Collection Centre (rubbish tip) – check the Gold Coast City Council website for locations and opening hours https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/Services/Waste-recycling

Leaving bulky waste in shared spaces without prior approval may result in removal costs being charged to the responsible resident.
